1 Cell Loss and Atrophy

Cell Loss and Atrophy describes cells that are not replaced (such as cartilage or brain cells) resulting in declining function.  As a result, we suffer declines in mobility, inability to handle illness and reduced cognitive function.

What Happens

With advancing years, a person experiences weakened muscles, loss of brain function (through decreasing numbers of healthy neurons), and cognitive decline, including dementia and impaired immune system (through cell loss in the thymus). This loss of function reduces health, but fortunately, the supplements that slow or even reverse the processes associated with this pathway are not expensive.

What We Can Do

There are three approaches we can take to slow down and reverse the effects of cell loss.

First, we can directly replace these cells or augment their function. Stem cell treatments are one area that has promise. For example, stem cells taken from the patient can be treated and reintroduced at the site where they are needed. Athletes such as LeBron James are rumored to have used this therapy to stave off arthritis in joints and extend years to peak athletic performance.

Second, we can take supplements that encourage the cells to live longer or activate the creation of stem cells that can replace them. One option is reprogramming the cells using epigenetic interventions, by taking things like nicotinamide-mononucleotide (NMN), Pterostilbene and possibly nicotinamide-riboside (NAD). Caloric restriction and intermittent fasting are also proven activities to increase cell longevity and replacement.

Third, we can take supplements that keep the replication of the cells healthy and extends their life. These supplements include telomerase (found in TA-65 or treated Cyclo-astragal and Astragaloside IV and others)

Intermittent Fasting / Caloric Restriction
High-intensity exercise is most effective if you can do it. Mental games and exercise help to keep the brain young.
